If you don't like the sound, drill out the center of the new canister's baffle. Start small and work up one bit size at a time until you have the tone you are looking for. It is time consuming, but much easier than welding an overbored baffle. Peter the Blacksmith or Max should be able to tell you what they settled on with the mods to stock and HD muffler, respectively. Neither one will give you bad info.
If you are only getting a backfire at shutdown, change how you release the throttle. A quick closer should dull or eliminate the backfire, as per Polar Pilot's advice posted earlier this year. If that doesn't do it, change your plug, check your valve adjustment, and dial out your airscrew an additional one turn over stock. My 98 now lets out a gentle cough at shut down, unless I intentionaly make it backfire at night to shoot out a flame.
Best of luck,
